Well, this is my personal theory:

He was from one tribe, she was from another. Like in Romeo and Juliet, their tribes and tribe leaders hate each other like nothing else on Earth.

Anyway, the two would-be starstruck lovers - who may or may not be one of the (probable) many offspring of the aforementioned tribe leaders - meet and fall in love. Unfortunately, a whirlwind romance and not too long later, they are found out by their tribe leaders. Hence, the punishment that exists only in my weird, warped, twisted mind.

They shall hug each other to death!!
